Heavy Trucks’ registration renewal date weighing between 5,000 and 7,999 pounds will soon change to a renewal period dependent on the month of birth of the owner, unless the owner is a business. Customers renewing their Heavy Truck registration expiring in Dec. 2020 will have the option of extending their renewal to their birth month in 2021 or an additional year to their birth month in 2022 with this update. Customers whose date of birth falls between January and June may pay a prorated fee in order to renew their registrations for 1 to 18 months in December 2020. Similarly, in December 2020 for 7-24 months, customers whose date of birth falls between July and December will pay the prorated sum.

HVUT stands for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, which is an annual federal highway tax levied on those heavy motor vehicles using our public highways, including trucks, tractors, and buses. The tax is only applicable to vehicles with a gross taxable weight of 55,000 pounds or more. For highway building and repair programs, the federal government then distributes taxes back to the states.

Section 320.02(7), Florida Laws allows motor carriers before issuing a license to have proof of payment or exemption from HVUT on motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more.
